HomeMy WebLinkAbout10/3/1988 - City Council - City Council Meeting MinutesCITY OF EAST WENATCHEE COUNCIL MEETING ' Oct. 3, 1988 Councilmembers present: Paul Cassel, Les Young, Tery McKee, and Dawn Collings. City Attorney Charles Zimmerman and City Clerk Peggy McArthur. Meeting was called to Order by Mayor Richard McGraw. Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as presented. Motion was made by Tery McKee, seconded by Paul Cassel and passed by vote of the Council. Bills and accounts were approved as submitted. Victor Benson spoke to the Council about the millions of people suffering from mental issness and said he had become involved in a support group when his son became ill. He stated that there are 900 self-help support groups nationwide. He stated one group is the Chelan/Douglas Alliance for Families of the mentally ill. Mayor McGraw proclaimed the week of October 2nd through 8, 1988 as "Mental Illness Awareness Week". Police Chief John Flinner presented the Council with a monthly police report and he ' said they now have a listing of all businesses within the City and they now have a list of all businesses that have alarm systems. Officer Bruce Nash and Douglas County Deputy Barnett presented Mayor McGraw with a DARE (Drug Abuse Assistance Education) Flag to be flown on the new flag pole made by the street department employees. Mayor McGraw thanked Bob Goodman for the good job he and his crew did on making and installing the flag pole. Bob said the cost of the pole and installation would run approximately 478.00. Bob also stated that the banner is up across Grant Road making the public aware of the Realtors Food Bank Drive. Mayor McGraw said the flag contest for an East Wenatchee flag has come to a close and a committee will judge the flag design and the chosen design will probably be presented before the Council at its next meeting. Motion was made by Paul Cassel to adopt Ordinance No. 88-18 which is an update to the Criminal Code that was created by the State Legislature because of a Washington Supreme Court Ruling which prohibits patronizing a prostitute. Motion was seconded by Les Young and passed by vote of the Council. Motion was made by Paul Cassel to adopt Ordinance No. 88-19 levying the general taxes for the City of East Wenatchee for the fiscal year commencing January 1, 1989 on all property both real and personal as required by law. Motion was seconded by Dawn ' Collings and passed by vote of the Council.
