There has been some uncertainty regarding how to apply this Article in some cases, so the following is a policy interpretation regarding employee compensation for carrying a pager: 1. There is no need for any employee to carry a pager or respond to a pager call, nor are they compensated to carry a pager during normal working hours. 2. If an employee who has been assigned to carry a pager takes time off during normal working hours, whether the time off is vacation leave, compensatory time, or sick leave in accordance with Article 19; and the employee is available and able to carry the pager and respond to call outs outside of normal working hours, then the employee will be compensated for carrying the pager in accordance with Article 22.9. 3. If an employee who has been assigned to carry a pager will be unavailable or unable to respond to call outs outside of normal working hours, then the employee will not be compensated for carrying the pager. 4. If an employee who has been assigned to carry a pager becomes ill or injured and goes on sick leave either before or during their shift, then it will be presumed that the employee will also not be able to respond to call outs outside of normal working hours; and the employee will not be compensated for carrying the pager for that day. 5. If an employee will be unable to respond to pager call outs for any reason, the employee is responsible to notify their supervisor as soon as possible in accordance with Article 22.9. 6. When an employee who is required to carry the pager desires to be relieved of this responsibility, they should contact their supervisor. The supervisor may assign this responsibility to another employee. 7. The assignmer-t to carry a pager shall begin at midnight on one day and end at midnight on the following day. End of memo
